horizontal scroll wheel

I'm using Leopard plus patched Xquartz. This may be a daft question but is there any way to get the horizontal scroll wheel on my mouse to send X11 events? I've run up xev and I get events for vertical scrolling but none for horizontal (I get the same result on Tiger). One of my X applications uses this ability and it's a pain that it doesn't work. I'm hoping it's a simple oversight (since the mighty mouse is relatively new).

And yes, I know that horizontal scroll wheel works because it works in iPhoto.
