I've tried to avoid second-guessing and lingering on the past, but
I'll just say that if Leopard had shipped with Tiger's X11 and a
dialog popped up on first launch saying "we're switching to X.org --
come help us!" I would have jumped at the chance. But as they say,
hindsight is 20/20. I'm quite happy with the job Ben has done of
resolving the worst of the problems and making timely releases. It's
not 100% solid yet, but it's getting better all the time.
As for the reason for X11 on OS X, it's true that it's a compatibility
environment, but X is not as static as it once was. X.org is the
future of X, and it would be foolish not to make that transition.
Cheers,
