X11 Leopard Fails to Start

I've been trying to catch up on the Leopard X11 posts, and haven't
yet. Apologies if this has been asked, but here goes...

I double-click the X11.app in /Applications/Utilities, which gives
me a zoom rect... but nothing else. X does not start.

Here's what the Console says:

10/30/07 4:22:34 PM [0x0-0x7e07e].org.x.X11_launcher[13401] command=/usr/X11/bin/xterm

10/30/07 4:22:34 PM com.apple.launchd[90] ([0x0-0x7e07e].org.x.X11_launcher[13401]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 13402 PPID 1 login

10/30/07 4:22:40 PM [0x0-0x7e07e].org.x.X11_launcher -xterm Xt error: Can't open display: localhost:0

If I use the Terminal and fire up "/usr/X11/bin/X" I can the start an
"xterm" by hand -- with my default DISPLAY=localhost:0 -- and it works
fine. So I'm totally at a loss. Any pointers?

TIA.
