After a prolonged absence, my caps lock inverting problem has come
back today with a vengeance. I have swapped out my keyboard with no
effect. I have discovered that the caps lock gets inverted whenever I
use either the control key or the shift key.
One way to reset it is to make sure the caps lock keyboard light is
on, unplug the keyboard, and plug it back in. The keyboard light goes
out without toggling the caps lock, and I am back to normal. But as
soon as I hit either control or shift, the problem starts all over
again.
I have no problems when I switch to any other apps, such as Safari,
Mail, or Textedit. Switching to another app has no effect on solving
the problem in X11 when I switch back.

Can you give me a bit of more information?
When you say that it is on but acting off, what is the state wrt:
1) the keyboard light?
2) switching application (to Textedit.app for example) - what char
gets input, and what is the keyboard light?
3) switching back to X11.app?
This will help me determine the level at which the problem is occurring.

Doug & Bill, thanks for the advice. In my case, it was definitely
only affecting X11. I could go to other applications an find the
caps lock behaving properly, but found it still inverted when I
returned to X11.
In the first case, I solved it by quitting X11 and restarting. The
second time it was not convenient for me to disconnect from various
computers, so I lived with it until it finally corrected itself
somehow. One of the affected computers is a brand new Mac Pro dual
quad, and the other is a MacBook Pro.
Bill, I assume your solution would completely disable the caps lock,
right? That wouldn't be to my liking, as I find the caps lock
useful sometimes.
