X11 No window

I use X11 quite a lot, especially to run Xastir. Today, when I launched X11 the usual menu system came up but the window that usually launches did not.

I can pick an item from the 'Applications' menu but it doesn't run, I can select 'Preferences' and make changes but nothing actually happens. The same item I usually pick from the X11-->Applications menu to run will run if I call if from a terminal window.

Basically X11 is not working and I'm not sure why, anyone have an idea?

I have a MacBook Pro, with 4gb of memory.
