X11 is installed by default on Leopard. What you need for MacPorts is
the X11 SDK which comes with XCode.
Installing X11 from the Leopard DVD over X11 in 10.5.2 or something
from http://xquartz.macosforge.org will downgrade you to something
quite unpleasant. You will also not be told that you need to reboot
your system after doing so (which is why X11 didn't launch for you).
My advice: Download 2.2.0_rc2 from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/downloads
and install it. It contains all the binaries, SDK, and documentation.

Hi!
I tried to install X11 from a Leopard DVD because I need it for
macports. As I didn't have my DVD with me, I borrowed the Leopard
DVD from a friend which he bought earlier.
Unfortunately, X11 simply doesn't work (I double klick it, but
nothing happens) so I wanted to reinstall it with my own DVD (the
one that shipped with my MacBook Pro). But once I started the
installer, I can no longer select X11 - I can however select all the
other applications.
The funny part: I can still install X11 through the Leopard DVD from
my friend.
What's going on here? How can I install X11 from the DVD the shipped
with my MacBook Pro?
I also tried to "uninstall" X11 first ... no easy task, as there are
a few different how-to's out there. I simply dragged the X11 from
Applications/Utilities into the trash and deleted the following from
command line:
sudo rm /Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.X11
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6
(some tutorials mentioned a /etc/X11 directory, but I don't have it)
Thanks,
Patrick
