More precisely, that was the xsel in the FreeBSD ports collection.
I went to http://www.vergenet.net/~conrad/software/xsel/ and enjoyed
the rant about ICCCM linked from there, downloaded xsel and compiled
it on the mac. It behaves reasonably.
In conclusion, much of my previous reporting is based on using a buggy
xsel in my testing. I apologize for the noise, but don't know that I
could have avoided it. Again! Argh.

PS. xsel would not build on the Mac because the configure script said
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
and then didn't arrange for -lX11, which of course didn't go too well.
Now strings and I together also cannot find XOpenDisplay in libX11,
but still, if you link with it, XOpenDisplay is there and all is well.
