Unless something else is unsetting it... At present there are at least 3
scenarios consistent with the data provided: a) no X tunnel is created b) one
is created by authentication fails, c) tunnel is just dandy but something is
interfering with the DISPLAY variable. The results of setting it manually
which distinguish between c) and the first two, and probably between those two
as well. As I'm sure you know, what one does as a diagnostic is not
necessarily the same as what one does on a day-to-day basis.
