No, it has never hung on startup. It's always been responsive for a
while.
If not, can you please take a sample (/A/U/Activity Monitor.app) of
the urxvt and X11 processes, so I can see where it's hanging.
As expected, urxvt hasn't hung since I sent my first message :)
However, Emacs just crashed and dumped some info to the console which
may or may not be useful:

That dump is from a Ubuntu Hardy guest VM, but there's some X stuff in
there that might point in the right direction.
