You don't need " quotes in this line.
But they don't hurt, and the rules for when you can do away with
double
quotes in the Bourne shell family are too weird to always remember,

less trust.
The rules are actually not too bad, once you wrap your head around
them.
....except they vary between shell versions, even in the original
Bourne shell.
And extra quotes do hurt - they make it harder to use the " quotes
inside the backticks, which in fact I'd be doing, personally, for
$X11_PREFS_DOMAIN (yes, I know it shouldn't have spaces in it:-).
Per POSIX the correct fix for this is to use $().
