Peter,
if anything, you should have a delay the first time starting X (when
there is no font cache). The second time, it should work fine (since
it has the cache there, and it doesn't need to update). Can you
verify that for me?

Hmm I was mistaken. I'd set my initial 'app_to_run' to xclipboard -
and it wasn't getting the right fonts. I guess this initial app is
started before the fonts are established?
Anyway, the fix was to write a shell script that called xclipboard
with -xrm arguments to set the fonts explicitly.

Thanks for that.
A tip to others removing their .xinitrc is to run
/usr/X11/bin/font_cache.sh
before removing or renaming their .xinitrc.
First time it can take some time and presumably finishes too late
for the server to start up and notice its work. So it can appear
that the new 'standard' xinitrc isn't working.

It's done in /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc ... so can either
delete ~/.xinitrc if you want... if you do want a custom xinitrc,
you'll have to do it there still.

Hi Jeremy... does/will the 2.1.4 upgrade stop the need for having

Congrats on the new job...
