I have the same iMac (graphics chip: ATI RadeonHD2600 with 256MB VRAM), and
while I have not yet seen freezes, that graphics update definitely is broken on

Basically the GUI feels like if I was connected to the machine over a slow
network:
- If I move windows (quartz or X11, no difference) with the mouse, they lag
behind the mouse pointer and move in jumps.
- When typing in a text window (like for this message, or in Terminal or
xterm), the letters appear with a noticable delay, and autorepeat of keys like
the delete key or the arrow keys is extremely slow, about 2 to 3 events per
second.
I have not yet gotten around to write bug reports to Apple, but I will do so
soon, and I think you should, too.
I had exactly this symptom appear after a reboot yesterday on my Mac Pro with the 2600 XT (hmm, I think I see a connection here...). But I'd had 10.5.2 and the graphics update installed since they came out with no new problems until then, so I'm not really sure what brought it on. I didn't see any strange messages in system.log, or any other problems aside from the 2-D GUI performance. (Oddly enough, Expose was still smooth.)
Anyway, another reboot put things back to normal. We'll see if it recurs.
