Tim, if you edit /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist to have:

        <key>ProgramArguments</key>
                <array>
                        <string>/bin/bash</string>
                        <string>--login</string>
                        <string>-c</string>
                        <string>/usr/X11/bin/startx</string>
                </array>

instead of the block that is there, it should work (you may need to reboot) for you with that startup script.
