The old way of "using" them was to change xinitrc but I don't know if
that's changed and if so, how.

Yes, you can still change that by changing xinitrc in /usr/X11/lib/X11/ xinit/xinitrc for system-wide stuff or just use ~/.xinitrc for user- only changes. The next version (2.1.2) will be using xinit to start the server, so hopefully that will help people see something similar to what they're used to and feel less intimidated by an unknown startup procedure.
