I should note, this was a stock install with just a replaced Xquartz binary from early on, and nothing moved.

if i run xterm, it blocks.
if i try to run /Applications/Utilities/X11.app from a terminal i see a "last login", a command=/usr/X11/bin/xterm, and get no xterm
