Mainly, I would like to be able to use multiple desktops and X11 and have things function in a useable, predictable manner. Leopard seems to break earlier third-party multiple-desktop applications, like Desktop Manager, so it seems I'm stuck with Spaces. Using X11 with Spaces, I get the random desktop-switching and focus problems that people have been complaining about. I also seem to have a problem with focusing on an emacs window if I select it using Exposé (this problem doesn't seem to occur with other X11 windows I've tried).

This is a known issue. Expose doesn't work right. It is a priority, and hopefully will be fixed some time soon.

As of early November, the suggestion was to reinstall Tiger's X11 to resolve some of these issues. Is that still the best course of action?

/shrug. I can't even guarantee if Tiger's X11 works with spaces, since I haven't gone that route. The latest release fixes many of the original Leopard issues, but some still remain.

And will doing that make Spaces behave itself? I'm afraid if I can't get functional multiple desktops, I may have to revert to Tiger completely, but I'm hoping to avoid that, since Leopard does have a number of useful improvements otherwise.

My hope is that it should be working reliably some time in the next month or so. We're about ready to move over to the xorg-server-1.4- apple branch sometime soon, and then hopefully we can tackle the expose / spaces events bug properly.

There is also the possibility that part of the problem lies in libXplugin itself which is out of my hands as an opensource contributor (and something that Ben or another Apple employee would have to fix).

X11 works reliably if you don't use spaces or just keep all your X windows in one space... that's what I've been doing until this issue resolves.
