Thanks, everyone, for the very rapid responses. I'm going to try Robin's version of Desktop manager (plus Tiger'sX11) first, and if that doesn't work, I'll try Jeremy's suggestion (i.e., keeping X11 all in one Space). Hopefully other people with my problems will now be able to find this archived thread and get the latest information about X11 and Spaces.

Many thanks also to everyone who's contributing to resolving this issue. I'd offer to help, but (dammit, Jim) I'm an astronomer, not a programmer--I'm in no way competent. Heck, avoiding stuff like this was why I switched to Macs in the first place. I look forward to having a fully functional Leopard X11 someday.

Thanks again,

Brian

it seems I'm stuck with Spaces.

Actually Desktop Manager still works for me on Leopard. Due the various X11/Spaces issues in the initial Leopard release, I'm currently running Tiger's X11 and Desktop Manager and this works just fine. I'm using version 0.5.3 with an older patch I did some time ago; see http://www.icir.org/robin/DesktopManager.
