Are you using the latest update? http://xquartz.macosforge.org
It was broken with Leopard's initial release, but we fixed it a while
back.

Well, that's what I meant by "third button"--I was hitting middle
mouse (which for me on my macbook is option-click) and nothing happens
when I do it...
