Final piece of information. I just tried the tektronix pane of xterm
with the default Tiger X11 and I get exactly the same problem.
Little open squares in place of the expected font type. Again, this
is on a PPC PowerBook (it works fine in Tiger on an Intel machine).
So, this is looking more like a general X11 problem (both with
XFree86 and X.Org) on PPC.

Jeremy,
Since I was able to duplicate John's issue on my PowerBook, I tried
your suggestion of downloading and compiling xterm to see if the
problem goes away. Did so (the version downloadable from the site
you included was 231, so that's what I built). I saw no obvious
issues or errors compiling, however, the tektronics pane in this
new version also shows the open squares instead of the expected
font type.
If you want me to send you a screen shot from my PPC machine so you
can see what we're talking about, let me know.

I'm sorry John, I don't understand what you mean here. X.org
doesn't distribute xterm. It's distributed here:
http://invisible-island.net/xterm/
Version 229 is included with the version 2.1.3 package. It was
compiled with these options:
--prefix=/usr/X11 --mandir=/usr/X11/man --disable-dependency-
tracking --enable-wide-chars --enable-luit --enable-256-color --
enable-logging --enable-load-vt-fonts
What version are you using that works, and what options are used
to compile it? Looking at Macports, I see them using version 229
as well, but they just use the default configure options. Can you
try compiling xterm yourself to find out what configure option is
causing the incompatibility with tek?

The tektronix (tek) mode in xterm in X.org distribution does not
work properly. All text in the tek window shows up as little open
squares.
On the other hand, the tek mode in xterm distributed via
darwinports works as expected.
