Activating backing store in Xquartz shipped with Leopard

Hello, We are trying to used some legacy software that requires a backing store, with Apple's X11. With the old X86 version of the X11, we just used and alias to X11 which included +bs to run X11. With all the launchd excitement in Leopard, this option seems unworkable. Any suggestions?
