Has Xquartz 2.2.1 disabled the ability to use "xhost +" on the local machine and "setenv DISPLAY" on the remote machine?

After upgrading to Xquartz 2.2.1 the only way I can get X windows up from the remote computer is using "ssh -Y".

"ssh -Y" is OK until I try to run matlab from the remote computer. The way it is setup here, when you type "matlab" a script is run which works out what the local computer is, and then submits a job to run matlab on a different computer (the remote-remote computer). The script does not forward X, but it sets the DISPLAY environment variable on the remote-remote computer by working out the IP address of the lcoal computer. The result with xquartz2.2.1 is a cannot open display type error.

Any ideas?
