Yes, except under X11.app, I was just getting :0 for the display. I switched to trying Terminal because I now often get two X11 icons showing up in the tab.

You're setting DISPLAY in your startup scripts somewhere (.profile or .bashrc). Don't do that. That is why you have the two icons and why you have the wrong $DISPLAY.


The Xlib connection problem is very annoying and it happens all the time.
Unlike solaris or linux where I can run X11 for days/weeks/months without
problems, under darwin, I keep having to kill and restart X11 (losing the
context of whatever I was doing). I've had this problem with Darwin
going back at least to Tiger on a powerbook.

Tiger? What issue did you have on Tiger? What you describe is an issue that cannot possibly occur on Tiger.
