I would like to restore the behavior I had in Tiger X11. I use X11 as
a terminal to connect to supercomputers for running atmospheric models
with X-windows forwarding. When I start X11 I like to have 2
customized xterm windows, with color and geometry of my choice. I did
this in Tiger by having the customized xterm commands in my
local .xinitrc file in my home directory.
There are 2 problems with this in Leopard. The first is that
executing X11 brings up its own white default xterm, which I would
like to eliminate. I have read some in the mailing list archives
about how to modify the plist to prevent this from happening, but
haven't tried any of the suggestions just yet.
The other problem, which I haven't seen addressed, is that X11 keeps
asking me if I would like to move aside my local .xinitrc file. This
is particularly bothersome when installing fink packages, during which
the window can pop up dozens of time consecutively.
Finally I gave in and let X11 move my .xinitrc file to .xinitrc.old.
So now I only get the one default window when I launch. I have read
Ben Byer's suggestion in one post that one might modify the global
xinitrc. I can't seem to find it. I did modify /etc/X11/xinit/
xinitrc as follows, with no effect:
# start some nice programs
#xterm &
xterm -sb -sl 10000 -geometry 75x50-0+0 -bg darkolivegreen -fg khaki &
xterm -sb -sl 10000 -geometry 75x50+45+5 -bg darkslateblue -fg ivory &
Is the global xinitrc file squirreled away in a different location
now? What is the best way to configure X11 to both eliminate the
default xterm and bring up my 2 custom xterms?
For reference, I have upgraded to X11 2.1.4, the latest release at the
time of this writing.
Thanks very much for your help,
Mike Mills
