Thanks for all the input so far.
I didn't find X11 as mentioned in the path under Utilities originally.
2.6 update I was referring to was for X11 from the apple site, not Gimp (the version currently trying is 2.4.4 Intel.
I think I've realized thanks to the reponses here, that the X11 install (and path to it) was an *option* to install from DVD, which so long ago, which I didn't choose, thus of course wouldn't *find* d'oh ... so now I'm popping in the old DVDs and having a go.
Then we'll I let the list know.
Thanks for all the input folks ... this is a really responsive list, by my experience and really appreciated. :)
