Most of the matlab GUI runs under Java which uses aqua windows.
Only the graphics windows run under X11. You can have a 'true' X11
version of matlab by starting it with the -nojvm option from the
command line.
I did try this but IIRC the windows still appear on the remote Mac
(where Matlab resides) and not the Linux machine where I'm logged in
