Doh! I forgot to copy the X11 list - I wondered why people were continuing to be so helpful...
I also discovered the (silly) reason why all the xhost/DISPLAY stuff wasn't working - while in the Manchester location I was not setting the DISPLAY properly on my linux box - I thought my Mac's name was more universal within my organization than it apparently is.
Anyway, many thanks to all those who chimed in to help me out :-)
