Not to be crass, or anything, but it was you (well, me too :) who
broke the X11 that was installed under 10.5.3, when you installed a
version of X11 that was not part of a GA release of the operating
system. This is the risk you take, when you install bleeding edge
software.
That being said, reinstalling xquartz is easy to do, comes with
virtually no risk, and is always recommended after an OS or security
update. Again, the cost of living at the bleeding edge...
