This may seem lika silly question, but did you click on the xterm
window to focus input on it?
It's a good question. Yes, I had. And actually, it was worse than
that. X11.app wasn't even starting up, in the sense that its icon
never showed in the upper left corner.
But the xterm window showed up? That's weird. Do you happen to have
a snippet from the system log when this happened? You can look at it
in Console.app or just directly at /var/log/system.log with your
editor / pager of choice.
Anyway, foolishly hoping to clean things up, today, 11/10, I
installed "X11" in the optional installs on the Leopard DVD, and
also everything in "XcodeTools.mpkg".
Then you just broke your X11 even further 'cause Leopard 10.5's
shipped X11 had many issues. If you want to go that route instead
of the macosforge.org release, you need to run the 10.5.5 Combo
Update after reinstalling from the DVD.
Foolish indeed, since I had already run the Combo Update.
Was this "X11.app doesn't show up in the dock" issue only occurring
after you installed the X11User.pkg on the DVD over your existing
10.5.5 updated system? If so, then it's probably a conflict that
actually would've resolved itself if you just ran the combo update
again.
