That's it!!! Seems I have a version of ssh in /sw/bin which gets chosen ahead of /usr/bin/ssh. I vaguely recall installing ssh from fink a few years ago. /usr/bin/ssh works fine.

Ah, yes, that rings a bell. I think I saw this with the macports version of ssh long ago, so I threw it out. /usr/bin/ssh does not have this problem. What is going on is that some ssh's are confused by the format of the DISPLAY variable, which is sort of unusual on the mac. - Harald
