Dear XQuartz developers,
I just want to give you a feedback about the long-awaited OpenGL
stereo with X11. With the new version 2.3.2_rc1, I've tried two X11
applications that use OpenGL stereo, and it is working, again! Many
thanks for your serious efforts to get OpenGL stereo working!!!
I'm glad it works better. I'm mostly to thank/blame :)
Before the final 2.3.2 version comes out, there appears to be still a
bug with OpenGL stereo. There is one X11 application, Chimera, that
produces the following error message upon startup:
Assertion failed: (!!req->stereoMode == !!(*a)->stereoMode), function
fbconfig_compare, file glxcmds.c, line 1231.
Abort trap
Chimera was an app that I wanted to try with stereo, but given the
license, I didn't think I was allowed to use it while wearing my Apple
hat. Perhaps an agreement could be worked out, or you could test
changes we may make?
It's an assertion that I added. I'm still a bit puzzled that it's
occuring. For some reason the fbconfig was deemed compatible with the
request, but it's probably not. I will have to verify that the
fbconfig_compatible() is working properly. It could be a branch later
on that tries to detect the best visual though too.
According to the developers of that software, glxcmds.c is not part of
their software but apparently part of XQuartz. Here is an excerpt of
what the responsible Chimera developer answered to me, because it
might be helpful for you:
"If I were a XQuartz programmer, I would test stereo with the stereo
demo program that is part of the Togl distribution,
<http://togl.sourceforge.net/ > (chimera uses Togl internally). Togl
requires Tcl and Tk and the Tk that comes with Leopard is for Aqua,
not X11, so Tcl/Tk would need to be compiled those as well."
Thanks! That's good news. That should help me narrow it down more
quickly. I'm a Tcl and Tk maintainer/developer at SourceForge too, so
I'm aware of the Togl extension.
Best regards and keep up your excellent work!
Thanks!
George
