Quoted Mike Sliczniak <email@hidden>:
Terminal.app in Leopard is a much poorer terminal emulator in Leopard
than it was in Tiger for various reasons. Basically it added tabs
(perfectly useless due to the screen program) and took away the
horizontal spilt that worked with the alternate screen while breaking
many emulation features.
In defense of Terminal.app it's very difficult to write a Terminal
program that is compatible with all of the programs, and behaviors
people have come to expect from xterm.
http://vt100.net/ has a wealth of old manuals for the vt100 and vt220
which IIRC contain the most commonly used terminal features.
If some sequence isn't working properly, then please do submit a
report to Apple. I wonder if the Terminal.app developers have ever
tried Thomas Dickey's test suite that he uses for xterm. He is the
current maintainer of xterm.
I've studied the xterm sources more than a few times, and there is a
lot going on there. I also submitted a patch that was accepted for
xterm years ago, so that it can be used as a widget in some programs
via the -into flag, such as Whimterm (a tabbed xterm for my Tk-based
Whim window manager).
That said, I don't have any particular complaints about Terminal.app,
but I understand there are so many different programs and expectations
of a terminal emulator.
