I've verified that the fix below works. So for those of you that like
to start up X11 from the dock or the applications menu, and have an
initial xterm pop up, this is a way to do it that won't result in the
initial xterm being subject to premature death. (Apologies, the
previous post inadvertently suggested launching an xterm from .cshrc,
it should be .xinitirc).

xlsclients, as suggested in macosxhints) and then execute
a .xinitrc that launches my initial xterm. Haven't tried this yet....
