To find the culprit, I guess you'll have to add one after the other to
the new account and reopen a session in between...
I'm glad I could help. I have in mind my M.Sc.A. times when I was
going to your office, totally clueless about unix & scripting, only to
see that guru bash scripting faster than lucky luke! It's your return
on investment :-)

This did the trick. Not certain what files in my ~ are messing up
X11 (don't have an .Xinitrc, etc.).
Thanks!

Dean,
Can you try from a newly created account, without any customized
config file?

William and Bernard,
Output from:
xterm &
is:
[1] 19391
Looks like a PID to me. However, no xterm visible.
Did X start?
And did you do a restart first? I asked you to do this to make
sure X was no longer running and we could start from a clean
slate. On the other hand you may be running in Full Screen Mode.
Try pressing option-command-a (all three at once) after X has
started (icon visible in Dock)
Result of echo $DISPLAY is:
d130-140:~ dlivelyb$ echo $DISPLAY
/tmp/launch-hF1fUI/:0
This looks like an appropriate value, so that's not the problem.
This file exists. Also seem to have 3 others of "launch-" prefix
and one of "launchd-" prefix. Not sure why so many.
How would I see if another app. was setting DISPLAY improperly?
Best,
Dean

I've followed the procedure described elsewhere:
1) remove all traces of X11, including package receipts
2) install X11 from Leopard install disk (optional installs)
3) install X11SDK from "" " " (under Xcode
(or whatever)
4) installed 2.3.1 XQuartz from SourceForge
I can get X started by entering (in Terminal):
/usr/X11/bin/startx
(followup messages below)
X11's menus show up, just can't get any of the x apps (xterm,
xeyes, etc.) to show up
on my screen.
The biggie for me is that I can't run Matlab, which uses X for
windowing. I'm DOA for
science (geophysics) now.
This is true for two different machines (both under 10.5.5),
one an upgrade from 10.4 and
the other not. I do muck around with Mac Ports, etc. to get
compilers, that sort of thing.
Any clues?!
