If you can't do some variant of system() (not being fully conversant
with Ruby), you can do much the same thing with the control-middle
button menu. Try "Do soft reset" first, if that fails then "Do full
reset". If one of these succeeds then it's likely that some program
(possibly your ruby console?) is sending something it shouldn't.
There are some escape sequences that can query the terminal status but
you need a program to interpret the result; I'm not sure it's worth
the effort.
