I see it too, but so far, only with ttf or otf fonts in /System/
Library/Fonts (ie, I can't get it to crash so far on any of the fonts
found in /Library/Fonts or in my ~/Library/Fonts areas).
I too see the crash with apple from the foundry list, but not with
monotype.
I have to head to work, so I can't continue helping troubleshoot for a
few hours.

I just received your message sent on January 3, so perhaps this
issue is already resolved. I am seeing the same thing:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of
range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
Value in failed request: 0xa00057
Serial number of failed request: 2607
Current serial number in output stream: 2608
Thanks for confirming. I don't think anyone else has seen this
message during the time Apple's list server was sitting on it. There
was no other response so far (at least none I could see).
To elaborate: This does not concern standard X11 fonts like "clean",
"bitstream charter", "fixed", "gothic", or "east syriac
ctesiphon" (although "fixed" appears to be a Japanese font for some
reason, and "gothic" a Korean font), and also not for some system
fonts, like "Arial", but the crash happens for other system fonts
like "applegothic" or "Arial Hebrew", or just choosing a foundry
like "apple" or "monotype".
