Michael, this is a very good idea and it works! :-)
However, I would like to also see a configuration option of the X server also, if it is possible, but with this solution at least, I can achieve what I need.

I use my MacBook in this configuration all the time. It is possible
to start/wake the system with the lid down, let the external monitor
become the main/only screen, then flip open the lid and run with the
lid's screen still off/disabled.
This is my normail daily work setup. I use the linux box's display
sitting next to it with ScreenRecycler to have a dual-headed
big(ger)-screen setup.
