Wait a minute... here is why it didn't work for Inkscape here, before: the size setting in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is used ONLY if no "dpi" value is set in org.x.X11.plist. (This applies to Inkscape only, because Gimp never uses it anyway) If I set a dpi value in the plist file, the size value in .gtkrc-2.0 is ignored.

Isn't it strange? Shouldn't them be independent settings?
