Chris,
I am going to dis-agree, at least on a theoretical level.
I have had work related requirements dual-headed Sun Workstations, where
I needed to run OpenWin/OpenLook on one head, and CDE in the other.
I have not specifically had gnome up on one Mac OS X head, and KDE up on
head two, but I don't believe that it is impossible, based on
experiences from the Sun Solaris platform.

Hi,
GNOME and KDE use compatible desktop-application interfaces which live
in your home directory; you'll need to create a different user. (It's
barely possible that setting $DOTDIR to point somewhere else would let
KDE work; I don't think it's very well tested.)
Not really true. Certainly you can run KDE and gnome sessions for same
user, I do it all the time. Of course, you cannot run them both at the
same time, connected to the same X display, but that is the only
constraint. As far as I am aware gnome stores its configuration under
various ~/.gXXX directories, whilst KDE uses ~/.kde, so they do not
interfere.
I often have KDE running on the main :0 display whilst for the same
user, same machine, have gnome running on another DISPLAY (connected to
vnc).
cheers Chris
