1) Do not use ~/.xinitrc :

rm ~/.xinitrc

Well, it looks like you've got an issue with Gnome (yeah, really insightful... I know...). You should probably ask on the fink lists too, since there might be a known issue given the versions of the gnome packages you have or whatnot.
