Hi Jeremy,
I never changed anything after the Snow Leopard install. If it is possible the the installation changed the color depth, then it is possible that I was using a different setting under Leopard. I simply do not know what depth I was using.
I do have time machine backups from before the install. Would you know if I can extract the setting value before the SL upgrade?
cheers,

Hi Jeremy,
I tried changing the color depth from thousands of colors to millions of
colors. I have not had the problem recur yet.
I then created a new user as you suggested. The problem recurred when the
color depth was set at thousands of colors, and not for millions of colors.
hmmmm!
The onset of the problem is not generally when X11 is launched. Usually,
things start okay, and after using the computer for a while, the problem
begins and then becomes constant. I mention this as a caveat since it does
not seem to be recurring at this time.
I thank you for the suggestion to change the color depth. I had become very
frustrated with the Snow Leopard istall. (I don't think I had yet mentioned
that this problem began with Snow Leopard.)
Hmm... were you using "thousands" on Leopard? It seems odd that it would occur with SnowLeopard but not Leopard. Despite their versions numbers being far apart, Leopard's final X11 server version is quite similar to SnowLeopard's.
