That option is off in MacPorts. I don't have Fink installed, but
I'm sure it's off there too since it is really just an emergency
override to solve the sort of problem you're having on broken
networks. In MacPorts you could easily turn it on temporarily by
editing the port file in a fairly obvious way.
XEmacs is more than just an editor, it's an entire environment.
Some people use it for EMail, web browsing, software development,
and many other things, rarely leaving it.
