On obvious thing to do is to look in the X11 preferences,
under Pasteboard. Make sure Enable syncing is turned on,
as well as Update Pasteboard when CLIPBOARD changes,
and Update CLIPBOARD when Pasteboard changes.
Maybe they got turned off somehow or other.

Hello, all. Within the last several days, copying & pasting between X
applications (running under Apple's bundled X11.app) and Aqua
applications
mysteriously stopped working on my 10.5.8 system, and nothing I've
tried has
any effect on the problem.
Copying & pasting from one X app to another (e.g. between multiple
xterm
windows) works fine, as does copying & pasting between Aqua apps,
but never
the twain shall meet -- each environment has its own idea of what's
in the
clipboard, and they don't overwrite each other like they're supposed
to.
Though I had changed a few settings that I theorized might have
caused this
(e.g. enabling "Emulate three button mouse" in the X11 Preferences,
and
changing the "Full keyboard access" setting in the Keyboard & Mouse
System
Preferences to "All controls" to enable tabbing to dropdown lists in
browsers), reverting those back to their previous settings did not
fix the
problem.
Therefore I have no idea what could have caused this issue, unless
it was an
OS X Software Update (or perhaps, I suppose, an update to Office for
Mac)
that I installed.
I've tried various things without luck, including the following:
* Restarting X11 and rebooting don't help.
* Some people reporting copy & paste issues in the past reported that
running xclipboard fixed their problem, but this didn't work for
me. It
just confirms the behavior that I see via test copies & pastes.
* I tried installing rxvt via fink to make sure it wasn't just an
xterm
issue, but it behaved the same way.
* I tried installing and running fink's autocutsel, but it had no
effect
other than drawing a strange dot at the bottom-right of my desktop.
* I tried changing my .xinitrc to run quartz-wm in --only-proxy mode
and
then running twm as my window manager, but the behavior was the same
in that case.
Any thoughts as to why quartz-wm's clipboard proxying seems to have
spontaneously stopped working, and/or how I might go about getting
it to
start again?
