I re-booted, re-installed the XQuartz 2.5 release, manually started XQuartz from its icon in the Applications folder, and then did not see the infinite loop of messages in the system log.
I then started NX (no machine) and it connected as expected.
I then stopped NX, quit XQuartz, and started NX by itself. This time XQuartz started automatically and NX resumed my session as expected.
So I must have gotten into some weird state after my previous attempt to install XQuartz.
Second time was the charm.
