Hello,
I am having problems starting x11 on 10.6.4, and I can't figure it out on my own, and cannot find the answer elsewhere.
First, a really quick question: does installing X11 create a path by default to startx from my home directory? I kept getting 'startx: Command not found', and had to add /usr/X11/bin to .bash_profile
1) Yes, you should have /usr/X11/bin in your path because it is added by /etc/profile which uses /usr/libexec/path_helper to setup PATH
This isn't in /etc/profile; I wonder how it got lost.
2) startx should not be run by you directly. It should be run by launchd.
Oh, I wasn't aware of this.
Now, to the main problem: when I dbl-click on X11 or type startx in Terminal I get >>>
Don't run 'startx' in Terminal. If you want to launch X11 from the Terminal, just run the application you want, like 'xterm'
Sometimes, it will loop, the icon will bounce in the Dock, disappear and come back, and the Activity Monitor will show many X11 processes that come and go.
About display:
phoenix:~ tg$ echo $DISPLAY
/tmp/launch-Z3GFmJ/org.x:0
That looks right. What happens when you run 'xterm' ?
After removing the xauth files and running term, I get

What's different from yesterday is that these errors aren't shown in Terminal, only Console.

?? This is odd. It looks like you have an issue with the interface. What are your OSX localization settings?

I set my system language to German, set it later back to English, but my dates in menus are still German. Does this come from LANG?

Ok. It looks like X11 is started at this point.
I reinstalled X11 that came with the 10.6 install disc, reinstalled the 10.6.4 combo update, and reinstalled Xcode. No luck, nor with deleting ~home/Library/Preferences/org.x.x11.plist (what IS interesting: my first plist delete was com.apple.x11.plist; this hasn't come back). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
You need to provide more info. Based on your execution of X11.bin above, it looks like X11 *IS* running... what makes it quit?
Indeed, it does run when I type DISPLAY="" /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin
I get the same messages in Terminal as the last time, and Console says
14.08.10 07:34:27 org.x.privileged_startx[7555] font_cache: Scanning system font directories to generate X11 font caches 14.08.10 07:34:27 defaults[7571] The domain/default pair of (org.x.X11, dpi) does not exist 14.08.10 07:34:28 X11.bin[7546] Could not connect the action apps_table_cancel: to target of class X11Controller 14.08.10 07:34:28 org.x.privileged_startx[7555] font_cache: Updating FC cache 14.08.10 07:34:30 org.x.privileged_startx[7555] font_cache: Done
I didn't realize it was running correctly, so I would ctrl-C. When I run something that requires X11, like dbl-clicking on the Gimp icon, I get my original errors and looping behavior.
When I use the above DISPLAY value, then dbl-click on Gimp, I get: 14.08.10 07:48:02 [0x0-0x61061].org.gimp.Gimp[13088] find: /Users/tg/Library/Application Support/Gimp/help: No such file or directory 14.08.10 07:48:02 defaults[13113] The domain/default pair of (org.x.X11, dpi) does not exist 14.08.10 07:48:02 [0x0-0x61061].org.gimp.Gimp[13088] 2010-08-14 07:48:02.817 defaults[13113:903] 14.08.10 07:48:02 [0x0-0x61061].org.gimp.Gimp[13088] The domain/default pair of (org.x.X11, dpi) does not exist 14.08.10 07:48:04 org.x.startx[13128] font_cache: Scanning user font directories to generate X11 font caches 14.08.10 07:48:04 org.x.privileged_startx[8686] font_cache: Scanning system font directories to generate X11 font caches 14.08.10 07:48:04 defaults[13150] The domain/default pair of (org.x.X11, dpi) does not exist 14.08.10 07:48:04 org.x.startx[13128] font_cache: Updating FC cache 14.08.10 07:48:04 org.x.startx[13128] xauth: creating new authority file /Users/tg/.serverauth.13128 14.08.10 07:48:04 org.x.privileged_startx[8686] font_cache: Updating FC cache 14.08.10 07:48:06 org.x.startx[13128] waiting for X server to begin accepting connections 14.08.10 07:48:07 org.x.privileged_startx[8686] font_cache: Done 14.08.10 07:48:07 org.x.startx[13128] font_cache: Done 14.08.10 07:48:07 org.x.startx[13128] . 14.08.10 07:48:08 org.x.startx[13128] . 14.08.10 07:48:09 org.x.startx[13128] . 14.08.10 07:48:10 org.x.startx[13128] . 14.08.10 07:48:11 org.x.startx[13128] . I don't know how to end these processes short of logging out/restarting.
