Chances are your $TERM isn't set right or is not matching.

I am having very weird behavior with /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm. It
cannot handle being resized. If I resize the window, it gets into
a very funky mode. The text does not wrap properly, and
backspacing causes all hell to break loose if you go back to the
previous line.
It might be helpful if you gave us some version information. Like
what X11 or Xquartz are you running? OS version and architecture
might be relevant too.
