That was, in fact, my point; what you're describing sounds like an incorrect
memory of the meta-as-command-shift-vs-international-charsets isue. which
often got misreported and confused with the question of what if anything
various keys should do (including "meta sends esc" silliness).
And part of *that* point is that there were never all that many conventions
that made enormous amounts of sense because about the only keyboards that
supported enough modifiers were whatever MIT was using (Lisp Machines?);
older Macs lacked "control", older Suns lacked "alt", and everyone else
lacked "command/meta", so it was always a battle to determine what the
available modifiers did.
