Fair enough, but the command I want to run requires 8-bit color, and barfs
a comprehensible-to-you-and-me-but-not-to-my-users error message when it's
run with a different color depth.

I settled on this method a little while after I posted the original message.
I wrote a wrapper that checks the plist color depth setting and toggles it
to 8-bit before starting X11. That works well if X isn't already running.
Is there a graceful way to quit X11 from a script? I have
no_quit_alert=false, and I've tried sending SIGTERM to various X processes,
but I can't get it to prompt me to save if I have open windows.
Thanks.
