My guess is that the problem is due to your home directory's ugly path name:
> /Volumes/(my user name)'s Home/Users/(my user name)/
The space and single-quote are likely making something in /usr/X11/bin/startx fail.
1) Yes, this is a bug.
2) You should not be doing that.
