Longer answer: "xset -q", look for the Keyboard Control section (usually the
first thing it outputs", check the key repeat parameters. You can have
problems with any of:
auto repeat
auto repeat delay
repeat rate
auto repeat keys
For comparison, here's mine (SL, 2.5.1):
