Just have one of the files ~/.xinitrc.d/*.sh run "exec WM", where WM
is the window manager of your choice.

That is a different issue. In that case, your solution is about right,
but then you'd be well advised to keep track of any changes in the
global xinitrc.d in case something shows up there that you would want
to run.
